Top Three Board Games 2023

Games night is an event I always look forward to, whether I’m playing at home or at friends. But sometimes it’s hard to know what to play, or if you’re looking for a new game, choosing just one can be overwhelming. For those of you looking for something different, these are my top 3 games of 2023!

You can see my top 3 games of 2022 here.

7 Wonders

7 Wonders is a firm favourite in our friendship group. Although each game uses set cards, each game is different, as a player’s board can affect their strategy, and the cards they get dealt impact their gameplay. On their turn, each player simultaneously chooses a card from their hand to play, before passing their hand to the player on their left or right (the direction changes throughout the game). Each player needs to collect resources to build Science, Military and Civilian, which helps them score points which they need to achieve victory. Do you score points early, and hope to intimidate your opponents with your military, or do you build resources, so your opponents have to pay you to build anything? 7 Wonders has numerous expansions, including Cities and Leaders, allowing you to change your game every time.

Ingenious

Ingenious is a game for 2-4 players, but also has a solo mode should you wish to play by yourself! The goal of Ingenious is simple: play tiles of different colours in rows to score points. The twist? The player with the highest lowest score wins! This means you could score 18 on five of your colours, but if you score zero on your final colour, and everyone else scores one, you’ll still lose. This adds some serious strategic elements to the game - do you focus on building up your own points, or do you work on denying points to your opponents? Ingenious is great for players of all skill levels, and is perfect for those who love making patterns using the different colours!

Forbidden Desert

Forbidden Desert is the second game in the Forbidden series, a set of cooperative games from GameWright. In Forbidden Desert, the players are racing against time to find the missing pieces of an engine, before they run out of water, or get by buried by the constant sandstorms. Forbidden Desert is perfect for players of all skill levels, as players are working together to win – if one player loses, everyone loses. Although designed for 2-5 players, as a cooperative game, it’s possible for you to play this as a solo game, simply choose how many characters you wish to play as and play as normal!
