Sequoia - Unboxing

“Let’s grow some trees!” This is something we hear thrown around on the news a lot, as a combat to climate change. Well, now you can grow your own trees with Sequoia! Sequoia is the second of two games that I backed as part of a Kickstarter by Board Game Tables – the first being Mountain Goats. If you want to check that out, follow the link here, but in the meantime, let’s grow some trees!

GPS, Mountain Goats, Sequoia, and the Expansion Pack.

Like Mountain Goats, Sequoia comes in a small, compact, lightweight box, and is also designed to be “one more game” when you reach the end of the night. It’s ideal for slipping into that awkward space that gets left in your bag by other games, or its small enough that you can simply carry it if you choose.

 The contents of Sequoia.

Sequoia has clear components, with 5 lots of 20 coloured tree tokens, and 5 dice in each respective colour: blue, green, grey, pink, and orange. Each set of tokens is uniquely shaped, adding more individuality to the game, and are easy to push out of the frame, whilst being sturdy enough to not fall out during transportation. The tiles are very light and refreshing, their vibrant colours, easily reflecting the colours of flowers and leaves, bringing the outside inside. There are also 11 plastic tiles, numbered 2-12, which are beautifully designed, and resemble the shape of a tree trunk when laid out.

The components all bagged up and ready to go!

As you might expect for a game that should take about 10 minutes to play, Sequoia has a simple and straightforward set of rules. However, simple as the rules may be, Sequoia does offer some interesting strategic options: do you spread out and claim lots of tiles, risking being outnumbered on each or, do you focus on a few tiles, and guarantee the points on those few? I’m excited to try out Sequoia, so stay tuned for my thoughts on the game!
